The Bullets2Bandages Story:
Bullets2Bandages was founded in San Diego in 2011 by former Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal divers Erik Spalding and Cole Evans, with the mission of giving back to the veteran community through the sale of apparel and accessories. What began as a few short-term projects in support of the Travis Manion Foundation eventually turned into a viable business once they realized that people really liked their necklaces and other products made from repurposed, once-fired military ammunition casings.
At some point Erik remembered receiving a homemade bottle opener from his Filipino Army counterpart that had been fashioned out of a once-fired .50 caliber casing, so B2B figured out how to reverse-engineer it with the help of a few San Diego machine shops and began selling the .50 caliber bottle openers online and through a handful of wholesale accounts such as Cabela’s and the Marine Corps Exchange. They soon added the more portable 7.62mm keychain bottle opener to the product lineup.
In 2012 Erik and Cole were joined by their US Naval Academy classmate Eric Montgomery, a former Marine Corps infantry officer who spent his business school internship with B2B before coming back full-time after graduating in 2013. The business continued to increase its partnerships with veteran charities and also signed trademark licensing deals with all four branches of the military. Eric’s obsession with craft beer and homebrewing (and B2B’s proximity to the 90+ breweries in San Diego County) led B2B to expand its footprint within the craft beer community and boost its sales to craft breweries and craft beer enthusiasts alike.
