The GABF Hotel After Party – Please Use a Glass
This post brought to you by Glass Is Life. The content and opinions expressed below are that of The Full Pint.
Whether you are a member of the craft beer industry, or a traveling fan of craft beer, one thing’s for sure: you will be indulging in many craft beers between October 2-4. If you are like The Full Pint, you’ve probably hosted the cramped up hotel room after party with the goal of sharing bottles of beer. From personal experience, the biggest hiccup in these impromptu late night parties are lack of glassware. There’s nothing worse than drinking out of a hotel coffee mug or worse; the little cup wrapped in cellophane. As we all know, glass is the preferred vessel of drinking craft beer. Glass naturally protects the taste and integrity of craft beer. We know brewers are passionate about their beer, and glass ensures their beer is delivered to the consumer just as intended.
We’re here to tell you not to settle for anything less than drinking out of a full-sized glass, even if you are hundreds of miles from home. Here are some tips to maximize your hotel bottle share party experience:
1. Pack a few heavy-duty beer glasses a head of time in your luggage. Take a few pint glasses that are a bit faded from the dishwasher, that you wouldn’t mind losing, put them in a gallon Ziploc bag (in case they break in transit), then wrap them in your clothing. Perfect for drinking beer, and you won’t be heart-broken if they break or you forget to bring them back home.
2. If you are in a nice enough hotel, call down to the front desk and ask for a few glasses. Even if they aren’t “beer glasses” ask for a few oversized wine glasses or something other than a small juice glass.
3. If you are in a motel rather than a hotel, go to the near by liquor store or bar. With complete honesty, explain to them you simply cannot drink quality craft beer out of a plastic cup or coffee mug and need a few good glasses. If they have them for sale, just buy them. If they don’t have any for sale, make sure you convey that you will return them before heading home.
4. When you are done for the evening, rinse your glasses out really good. You are obviously not at home with a kitchen and dish soap, and those heavier beers will leave a sticky lining at the bottom of your glass, and even the hottest water has a hard time getting that off.
Glass is an ideal, natural shield for beer, protecting flavor from the effects of light and air. Glass doesn’t require a plastic liner that can interact with beer in unfavorable ways.
