If you’ve been watching the beer weather lately here in California, it’s been hazy with sporadic shit storms due to the recent controversy over the recent reformed California Growler policies. Basically The ABC wrote a set of guidelines sort of explaining that breweries COULD potentially fill generic growlers and COULD possibly create their own in house system of tagging or labeling with their blessing, thus eliminating the need for your average craft beer diehard from having to have a dedicated growler for each brewery they visit. I can tell you first hand that I have a book shelf in my garage with about 30 different growlers. I really only use about 3 of them, and thus, have a lot of wasted space being taken up. Since this information went viral on Facebook and RateBeer, it’s been a very bumpy ride.
A few higher profile craft breweries were taken to the carpet by their loyal fanbase as to whether they would honor these new guidelines, and create a process in which a patron could bring a generic/non-branded growler in for a fill. The Bruery of Placentia, CA said yes, BUT it must be the 2 litre Palla-Style growler and must have no markings on it. Knee Deep Brewing said no at first, but then caved into pressure and made a policy similar to The Bruery’s. Last week, Russian River released a very bold statement, in which they said it wasn’t cost effective, a logistical hassle and counter productive to their branding.
That brings us to the million dollar question(s): Where does Stone Brewing Co. stand in all of this. As of press, there stance has been they don’t have an official stance yet. Fans are on the edge of their seats waiting to hear what Stone says in regards to whether their customers can bring in a generic growler for fill or not. Please take a minute to participate in our quick polls regarding this. Cheers!
