Review - Anchor Our Special Ale 2007

July 24th, 2008 · No Comments

While I do not have many Christmas beers in my reserve, I thought it would be nice to review Anchor Our Special Ale 2007 aka Anchor Christmas in July. This beer has been made each year by Anchor, since 1975. While this beer isn’t particularly high in alcohol, it has been widely reported that this brew can be aged for many years, and will go on quite the flavor journey in the process.

Anchor Our Special Ale 2007 / Anchor Christmas 2007 - 6 months later - 12 oz bottle poured into a New Belgium glass.

Appearance: Midnight cranberry red with a tight, frothy head.

Aroma: Cranberries, raspberries, cloves, and fresh cut female holly.

Review - Weyerbacher Hops Infusion

July 23rd, 2008 · No Comments

Weyerbacher Hops Infusion
6.2% abv

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a chilled pint glass.

Appearance
Nice and clean reddish yellow color with excellent transparency. Over an inch of head that left a nice spider web lace around the top of the glass.

Aroma
Extreme is the best word. My nose engulfed the cornucopia of hops present. It was not too much though and smelled very piney and fruity.

Review - Barley Creek Angler Black Lager

Barley Creek Angler Black Lager
5.0% abv

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a chilled pint glass.

Appearance
Medium roast coffee color with the slightest shades of burgundy and red. Pretty good clarity with lots of head at over an inch and a half sitting atop the pint glass.

Aroma
Not much aroma but what I could smell was rather nasty. Small hints of sulfur and wet dog smell consumed my nostrils.

Black Dog English Style Amber Ale

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a chilled pint glass.

Appearance
Red-brown amber color with a light tan foamy head. This beer is quite thick looking, almost like a milk shake.

Aroma
Yeast and citrus fruits. Some hints of orange and lemon are nicely balanced with the sweet bread-like qualities from the malt and yeast.

Review - North Coast Ruedrich’s Red Seal Ale

July 17th, 2008 · 1 Comment

Earlier this month, I reviewed arguably one of the best strong ales, North Coast’s Old Stock Ale. A trait of many west coast brewers is to have a burst of hop flavor, whether it be a Pale Ale, India Pale Ale, or Imperial India Pale Ale. At Trader Joes, I found a six pack of North Coast Red Seal Ale (Actually it says Ruedrich’s Red Seal Ale) for a modest $6.49 a sixer.

If you enjoy Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, you will like it a tad more or less. There is a goofy website that calls this an Amber Ale, but for the love of god, all you have to do is smell it to know. Amateurs!
