21st Amendment / Elysian “He Said” Pumpkin Beers Battle It Out Once Again
San Francisco, CA – Many harvest moons ago, 21st Amendment’s brewmaster and co-founder Shaun O’Sullivan got together with Elysian Brewing’s brewmaster and co-founder Dick Cantwell and decided to create a pumpkin beer like no other. The result is He Said, an unexpected pumpkin beer, or should we say two pumpkin beers, making its return in a seasonal four-pack this September as part of 21st Amendment’s “Insurrection Series” of limited release beers.
“The story of the beer’s conception has always been a little fuzzy,” 21st Amendment co-founder Nico Freccia says. “Shaun and Dick have totally different interpretations on how this partnership came to be, but one thing’s for certain, we knew if we were going to introduce a pumpkin beer and put it in a can, it had to be in collaboration with the pumpkin king, Dick, himself.”
Thankfully, O’Sullivan and Cantwell couldn’t see eye-to-eye on a single collaboration, so they created two completely different pumpkin beers. A light ale packaged in a dark colored can, O’Sullivan’s He Said is a Belgian-style Tripel brewed with pumpkin, galangal and tarragon, while Cantwell’s He Said, a dark lager in the lighter can, is a Baltic-Style Porter brewed with pumpkin, caraway and cinnamon. Two beers of each are packaged together and sold in festive-colored four-pack carriers.
“Dick remembers our collaboration conversations one way, while I remember it another, and so goes the He Said story,” recalls O’Sullivan. “In the end, we decided it would be the most fun to team up and do what we do best – brew two great tasting pumpkin beers and put them on the market in an unorthodox way.”
He Said (8.2% ABV) will begin its roll-out in early September in all 17 of 21st Amendment’s current distribution territories. Look for pumpkin-colored carriers that feature the two brewers, each telling his side of the He Said story throughout CA, OR, WA, AK, ID, MN, OH, MA, NY, NJ, DC, DE, MD, PA, VA, GA and NC. ABOUT 21st AMENDMENT:
In 2000, Nico Freccia and Shaun O’Sullivan opened the doors to the 21st Amendment brewpub in San Francisco’s historic South Park neighborhood with Freccia managing the restaurant and O’Sullivan spearheading the brewing process. In addition to quickly becoming one of the city’s favorite pubs, 21st Amendment began expanding beyond the Bay Area by helping to pioneer the movement to canned craft beer. Known for their witty names and delicious brews, 21st Amendment offers three year round selections, as well as seasonal offerings and their infamous ‘Insurrection Series’, a once-in-a-while limited edition release. Today, 21st Amendment is among the top 50 craft beer brewers in America and is sold in 17 states.
