Hopworks: Bourbon Barrel Aged ‘For Those About To Bock!’
A Southern twist on a German classic, we barrel-aged this delectably crisp, malty lager in Buffalo Trace Bourbon barrels for 9 months. What was once lightly caramelly, biscuity and crisp now has a rich, fruity flavor and warming alcohol finish.
16 Plato 6.9% ABV 25 IBU
Block 15: 2009 Pappy’s Dark
Brewed with six malts of Belgian & British origin. 100% aged in fresh emptied 9 & 10 year old bourbon barrels. Bourbon in color with a complex and unobtrusive malt backbone. Bright aromas of bourbon, fresh baked bread, caramel, and oak. Velvety texture, rich malt and bourbon flavours with an enticingly warm bourbon finish. With age, Pappy’s Dark bourbon character has mellowed and transformed the beer into another experience.
10% alc/vol 40 IBU’s
Deschutes: Bourbon Smoked Cascadian Dark Ale
We tried many a recipe in our development of the Hop in the Dark. Some were just ‘too much’ for the average drinker…this beer has an extremely complex malt profile with over-the-top hop bitterness, made even crazier with bourbon-barrel aging and 8% Cherry Smoked Malt. Yeeow!
IBU’s: 87 Alcohol Content: 6.5%

About the New School:
Founded on January 1st by Ezra Johnson-Greenough the site has had its ups and downs but has stayed relatively consistent for exactly 1 year this January 1st there has been 308 posts from a variety of regular and infrequent contributors like Chris Ensign aka King C., Ben Edmunds of Oregon Beer Odyssey and Breakside Brewing and “Swine-Flu” Jimmy who specialized in beer and cheese pairing. The New School specializes in breaking beer news and brewery scoops, in depth articles about brewers and breweries as well as the commentary and critique that has possibly been the biggest area of interest and complaint. In 1 year the New School has risen to the 5th highest ranked beer blog in the country according to Wikio and been quoted in journals like The Atlantic, recognized as one of the leading proponents of Cascadian Dark Ales as well as blurring the line between beer and spirits coverage.
The New School has already spawned regular events like Night of the Living Ales: 28th Street Pub Crawl and an ongoing series of beer cocktail events dubbed Brewing up Cocktails. In the new year the New School plans a site redesign and overhaul, more educational beer events, expanding Brewing up Cocktails events in Portland and along the West Coast, a possible book of beer cocktails and is currently exploring transformation into a Non-Profit for the Advancement of Beer Education.
