Breakfast Of Champions Beer Dinner At Wynkoop
Devner, CO – April 11 at 6:30 PM we present a special dinner celebrating Kurt Vonnegut, Tender Belly Pork and Novo Coffees at The Wynkoop Brewery.
Thursday Aprill 11 at 6:30 PM, we are hosting a Breakfast of Champions Beer Dinner. The night is a celebration of author Kurt Vonnegut (he died on April 11, 2007) and features a one-night-only menu of breakfast dishes showcasing Tender Belly Pork and Novo coffees.
Each dinner course is paired with a Wynkoop beer, the night’s beer list includes the return of Kurt’s Mile High, a special beer we brewed years ago in honor of Vonnegut. The beer is a coffee-infused lager built from a recipe by Vonnegut’s brewer grandfather. It was given to Wynkoop founder (and now Colorado Governor) John Hickenlooper by the late great author of Breakfast of Champions, Slaughterhouse 5 and other Amercian-literature classics.
The Novo coffee used in this year’s version of Kurt’s Mile High Malt is called Anyetsu and is grown in Wellega, Ethiopia. “It’s a lighter roast with a nice fruity acidity,” says our head brewer Andy Brown. “I chose it because this beer is not a big coffee stout, but rather a refined Vienna lager. So I wanted a coffee that wouldn’t overwhelm the beer.” Instead of using a dark malt to give the beer it’s deep copper color, Brown used the coffee in the mash. Andy says the coffee also helped to acidulate the mash as well as provide color and flavor. “We also used this Novo coffee to create a cold infusion,” he notes, “that we added to the finished beer for a little more coffee flavor.”
We’ve brewed this beer just two times in our 25-year history: In 1996 for the beer’s debut (as part of our famed Denver Public Library series) and again in 2007 in tribute to Kurt’s passing. “I stayed very faithful to the original recipe,” Andy says, “except for the cold infusion, which is a new-school brewing technique.”
Breakfast of Champions dinner attendees get the first taste of the beer before it hits our house taps the next day on April 12. During dinner there will a reading or two from a Vonnegut tome and a raffle for a pair of Kurt Vonnegut-themed gift baskets from our neighbors at the Tattered Cover.
Dinner is $45 plus tax & tip, make your reservation at [email protected] or 303-297-9999. This unique throwback night is part of our ongoing celebration of our 25th year, I hope you can join us for it.
