Twisted Pine West Bound Braggot
From Twisted Pine – West Bound Braggot is Twisted Pine’s modern take on a medieval classic. Braggot, more or less a hybrid of mead and ale, was popular throughout Europe in the Middle Ages and Chaucer even made mention of the drink in his Canterbury Tales. The Twisted rendition began with malted barley, orange blossom honey and Citra hops, before the brewers shifted into adventure mode and added Tasmanian pepper berries and Buddha’s Hand to the kettle. Then for the finishing strokes this unique ale was fermented with a Belgian saison yeast.
Twisted Pine Brewing – Twisted Pine Artisan Ale Series – West Bound Braggot – 750 ml bottle – 8% abv.
Appearance: Pours a bright yellow gold with a white ring and a white swirls atop.
Aroma: Mouthwash, sage and thyme.
Taste: Herbs, mint flavoring, dry malt, a touch sweet.
Mouthfeel: On the full side of medium bodied. Average carbonation.
Overall: I really enjoyed this. I’ve been indifferent with these types of beers, never been offended, but never have been wowed. This was very well balanced, showcased the herbs, and was very drinkable.
