Stone Southern Charred
From Stone Brewing Co. – Arrogant Bastard Ale’s(really) big brother, this dark amber ale is brewed with a huge malt bill and a belligerent amount of hops. It’s a heavy, bitter beast of a beer and absolutely not for the timid.
Stone Brewing Co. – Stone Southern Charred – 500 ml. bottle poured into a goblet. 12.6% abv.
Appearance: Pours a hazy bright amber. Active creamy tan top.
Aroma: Maple syrup, caramel, soft bourbon.
Taste: Toffee, bourbon, piney hops, oak.
Mouthfeel: Syrupy with easy carbonation.
Overall: I’ve tried many iterations of Double Bastard over the years. Fresh, cellared, aged on oak chips, aged on hot peppers, but this is by far, the best treated version of Double Bastard I’ve ever had. After re-reading Stone’s marketing materials, I found out this beer rested in bourbon barrels that once held Stone Suitable for Cave Aging – An Imperial Smoked Porter Tribute to Danny Williams. Smooth edges, decadent flavor profile, damn near perfect.
