Stone 12th Anniversary Aged in Bourbon Barrels
One of the many reasons to go to a Stone Brewing World Bistro and Gardens Event is to try some of the beers they make that never leave the brewery. At last years Pour it Black and this years Oakquinox many of us locals got to try Stone 12th Anniversary Bitter Chocolate Oatmeal Stout Aged In Bourbon Barrels. The untreated beer was one of my favorite all time Stone Beers, and have watched the beer age gracefully since 2007.
Stone Brewing Co. – Stone 12th Anniversary Aged in Bourbon Barrels – On tap at Stone Oakquinox 2012 – 9.6% abv.
Appearance: Pours a seemingly thick dark brown with nary a head.
Aroma: Chocolate, soy sauce, vanilla, dark fruit.
Taste: Chocokate, vanilla, wood, bourbon, char.
Mouthfeel: On the thin side of medium bodied with very low carbonation.
Overall: I loved this beer fresh, I love it with 3-4 years on it, but I didn’t love this. My palate perceived this beer to be with less body than in it’s original form. It did get nice and woody, that part was enjoyable.

Very much agreed. Barrel aging it seems to have messed up all the good qualities of the barrel-free version.
