Sierra Nevada/Dogfish Head Life & Limb
From Sierra Nevada – Life & Limb is a 10% ABV strong beer that defies style characteristics—brewed with pure maple syrup from the Calagione family farm in Massachusetts and estate barley grown on the Grossman “farm” at the brewery in Chico. The beer is alive with yeast—a blend of both breweries’ house strains—bottle conditioned for added complexity and shelf life, and naturally carbonated with birch syrup fresh from Alaska; it is the first beer we know of ever to use birch syrup in the brew. If stored under good conditions, this rich, full-bodied beer should age well for years.
Sierra Nevada and Dogfish Head – Life & Limb – 24 oz. bottle poured into a goblet. 10% abv. From trade on ratebeer.com
Appearance: Pours a dark brown with a lasting, 1/8 inch tan head. Leaves spotty lacing behind.
Aroma: Perfume, bubble gum, maple syrup and booze.
Taste: Maple syrup, booze and bitter hops.
Overall: I found it to be a boring, one dimensional booze bomb. Not very complex, and seemed like it missed it’s mark or needs time to settle.
Additional thoughts: Looking back on my tasting notes, you can see I had super high expectations for this beer. It took me 2 months to wrap up a trade for this, I had friends over to watch WWE Royal Rumble, I had beautifully smoked baby back ribs to eat, and this beer just didn’t impress me. I have nothing but love for SN and DFH, but I would put this in the miss category. With that said, I am hoping to crack open my other bottle in a few years, and I will do so with an open mind.

Wow, that’s disappointing to read. I was shocked when I saw this beer on a day trip to visit my dad in St. Louis. It’s been sitting in my fridge for a few months waiting for the right time. Sounds like the right time might be a year or more from now…

Good to know… I have only one bottle and have been trying to figure out how long to hold off on it. Luckily I have dozens of other bottles to try first so we’ll let this bad boy sit around and get happy for awhile longer.
