Double Bastard Ale 2006 – One Year Later
A dear friend brought me over a 22oz bomber of Stone Brewing – Double Bastard Ale – 2006. To be exact, this bottle was acquired at Lone Hill Liquor in Glendora, CA. Big should out to the LEGEND STAN~!
Appearance: A dark red ale with a rather active head. I poured this into a warm pint glass, perhaps that is why I have an inch of head. A tad bit of light can pass through the glass, showing a dark, murky maroon.
Aroma: Sweet carmely malts and a little bit of orange marmalade. Traces of baked brown sugar cookies.
Taste: A similar flavor to a fresh Stone Old Guardian. Although there isn’t much hop aroma, there is a big hop flavor that is a tad stronger then the rest of the flavors I find. After I get past the hops, I taste milk chocolate, pear and a tad bit of alcohol. There are hints of Christmas spice as well. A very flavorful, layered ale that won’t let you pin point every single flavor.
Mouthfeel: Very syrupy on the tongue and mouth. This beer has calmed down with the carbonation of the course of one year. It still has a wonderful carbonated texture, just not as active as previously.
Drinkability: Highly drinkable. Although you can taste, smell, and feel the alcohol, it has so much going on, that you are curious for the next sip, and the next sip….and so on. Try not to have any beers before this, so you can enjoy the full spectrum of flavors. I’d be curious to know if Stone saved some of this batch for their 2007 edition of this beer, as the 2007 is much more mellow then the fresh version of 2006, and closer to a year old version of the recipe. That’s assuming they closely stick to the same recipe every year. As much of a Stone fanboy that I am, I can honestly say, Stone doesn’t screw up there special brews.
