I was down in Philly this weekend and of course had to stop into Monk’s Cafe. After a couple of flemish sour ales, I needed a change, and this was it.
Color: The color was that cloudy straw yellow color you expect from a good wheat beer. It had a nice foamy white head that seemed to have serious staying power.
Aroma: That wonderful banana and cloves that every german wheat beer should have, plus a wonderful citrus hop note. Needless to say I was intrigued.
Taste: I was amazed at how well the banana flavor of the german wheat yeast was complimented by the citrus of the hops. It’s a very strange sensation to have all of the flavor of a traditional wheat beer plus a wonderfully balanced citrusy character from the american hops all in one mouthful. A very refreshing combination.
I have to say this beer really brings together the best of two very different styles. If you get a chance to try it on draft I wouldn’t pass it up.
