New Glarus Brewing – New Glarus Back Forty Bock – 12 oz. bottle poured into an imperial pint glass. 5.5% abv.
Appearance: Pours a dark brown with a red hue. Atop sites a foamy head that subsides to a 1/8 inch layer of off white cream.
Aroma: Toasted malt, light burnt caramel, raisin.
Taste: Wheat toast, burnt sugar, dried dark fruit. Finishes with slight spicy hop, toasty and nutty.
Mouthfeel: Full bodied, active carbonation.
Overall: Pretty solid. The beer builds momentum. At a first sip and smell, the beer seemed it would lack the flavor and depth I was looking for. As I got half way through the glass, the beer became more flavorful, spicy and lively. I would recommend drinking it cold, but maybe give it 5 minutes of sitting time.
