Modern Times Beer – Modern Times Goblin Rock IPA – 16 oz. can poured into specialty glassware – 7.1% abv.
Goblin Rock marks the fifth in a series of special release, hazy IPAs from Modern Times. I’ve come to respect their brewery-only release of these beers to ensure freshness and rule out poor refrigeration and/or heat damage during retail distribution. Previously, I tried this beer when it was tap-only and was hopeful it would be canned in the future. My wish was granted.
I sampled this as a 4-pack of 16oz cans. (The labels, by the way, are some of the best graphic designs I’ve seen in the industry.) Goblin Rock feels much more put together than Blam Blam with less of a leafy hop matter milkshake flavor and more of a tropical fruit smoothie character. Like the others, this one pours straight out of the can a milky, opaque, glowing orange color with generous, rocky foam on top. The aroma is softer than others in this series but arguably more enticing with banana, papaya, and pineapple smoothie at the center. The flavor begins with a spicy hop bite followed by thick, dairy-like milkiness with tropical melons and bitter fruit rind. The finish is dry and neutral – fairly minerally and quenching. Goblin Rock definitely shows some improvements in constructing these juicy, hazy IPAs. I hope we see this one again.
