Evil Twin/Stillwater/Stone The Perfect Crime Black Smoked Saison
From Stone – When two gypsies team up with an arrogant bastard, there is bound to be some criminal activity…better to view this project as a conspiracy rather than a collaboration. The strengths of all involved were utilized to break the laws of style guidelines…dark with deception, mysteriously smoked, unexplainably dry, and intriguingly hoppy…maybe it’s best not to even talk about it.
Stone Brewing Co. – Evil Twin/Stillwater/Stone The Perfect Crime Black Smoked Saison – 12 oz. bottle poured into a goblet. 6.8% abv.
Appearance: Pours a amber hued dark brown with a white pinstripe.
Aroma: Low tide at the shore. Tripel yeast, camp fire.
Taste: Spicy dry belgian yeast, firm euro hop spice finishes woody.
Mouthfeel: Full bodied modest carbonation.
Overall: I wasn’t that excited to try this. Judging the book by it’s cover, this didn’t sound like a beer I’d dig. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I did enjoy this beer. Stone seems to have a good grip on Saisons, even though this is far from a typical Saison. I’d be curious to see what kind of barrels Stone tries to age this beer in, I’d probably go with a red wine barrel or a smokey Scotch whiskey barrel.
