Double Mountain Molten Lava
From Double Mountain Brewery – Molten is the most aggressive IPA in our little family, yet it somehow manages a great balance… while still achieving full hop overdrive. This year’s offering is stronger than the last and features a more complex hop bill, with citrus notes dominating. Dry-hopped with enormous bagfuls of whole hop flowers, which provide added aroma and flavor without harsh bitterness. Watch out, this brew is deadly!
Double Mountain Brewery – Double Mountain Molten Lava – 500 ml. bottle poured into a pint glass. 9.4% abv.
Appearance: Pours a cloudy, seemingly unfiltered amber orange with visible floating sediment. The head quickly fades to a small white cap.
Aroma: Much pine upfront, freshly sliced grapefruit.
Taste: Big ol mouthful of pine and bitter melon rind. Some fruitiness and toasty malt. Finishes with lingering bitterness. A bit of noticeable alcohol and some phenols.
Mouthfeel: Full bodied with lively carbonation.
Overall: This is a perfect example of an Oregon Double IPA. Full bodied, lots of pine all balanced with an equal amount of malt presence. This seemed a bit on the hot side to me, perhaps it was the massive hop bill.
