Sun King Brewery Celebrates Revised Indiana Brewing Laws
(Indianapolis,IN)- Sun King Brewery is thrilled to celebrate the passage of Senate Bill 297, which, when it goes into effect on July 1, 2015, will increase the maximum amount of beer a small brewery can manufacture per year for sale within Indiana from 30,000 to 90,000 barrels while still operating a restaurant or tasting room.
“We are thankful to all of the state representatives and craft beer enthusiasts who helped support small business and the Support Indiana Brewers campaign,” said Clay Robinson, co-owner of Sun King Brewery. “When it goes into effect, the new law will allow us and other small breweries to employ more Hoosiers and get more local craft beer to fans who love it.”
Senator Ron Alting authored Senate Bill 297, which becomes law July 1 and will allow Indiana’s breweries to expand production to supply the growing demand for Indiana craft beer. The Indiana craft beer scene has more than doubled its share of the local market in the last four years; allowing breweries to reinvest in the economy; create more local jobs; and attract craft beer lovers in other states to visit their breweries.
The previous law limited Indiana breweries to producing 30,000 barrels per year to be sold in Indiana and keep their Small Brewers Permit. Breweries could produce more beer under that law, but exceeding the limit would have eliminated Sun King’s abilities to operate a tasting room and distribute their own beer in central Indiana. Those limits forced Sun King to scale back its distribution throughout the state.
“With the new law, we’re excited to begin planning several ways to increase our production in Indiana including adding infrastructure to our current downtown facility, exploring options for a destination brewery in Fishers and working with distributors to broaden our reach statewide,” said Robinson.
On Wednesday, July 1, 2015, Sun King will celebrate the law becoming official with specials at both the Downtown Indianapolis brewery and the new Fishers Tap Room & Brewery. Sun King celebrates its sixth anniversary with a party, dubbed SKB VI, on June 27, 2015, in their south parking lot at 135 N. College Ave. in Indianapolis.
Indianapolis-based Sun King Brewing Co. and Munster-based 3 Floyds Brewing Co. launched “Support Indiana Brewers” in January as a public awareness campaign to gain support for raising the limit on the amount of beer that breweries are able to produce in Indiana. As the end of April, more than 3,000 Indiana resident supporters logged on to www.supportindianabrewers.com and sent emails to their local elected representatives.
