SanTan Pioneers Efforts To Strengthen Woman’s Role In Craft Beer
SanTan Brewing Company pioneers efforts to strengthen a woman’s role in craft beer with CanTan Tuesdays, benefiting the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
Chandler, AZ – Originally considered to be the role of women, the art of beer making comes full circle with a growing increase in women drinkers and brewing entrepreneurs amidst the world of craft beer. Leading the charge is part owner and CFO of SanTan Brewing Company, Heather Sterling.
Sterling is one of the few women in the valley working in craft beer. Sterling has over 15 years of experience in accounting with fortune 500 companies and more recently has worked in a consulting capacity for entrepreneurial businesses helping them to develop long term financial planning strategies. She has been with SanTan Brewing Company since the beginning of operations as part owner and CFO. Since then, she has developed a love for craft brewing. “I’m excited to be involved in a dynamic industry that is still transforming and has so much potential for growth and development, “said Sterling.
Beer historian, Alan Eames has cited women with the invention of beer, supported by his substantial research of ancient societies, cultures and religious myths including the Egyptian goddess Hathor who was worshiped as the queen of drunkness, dance and inventress of beer. As monasteries began to brew beer on larger scales women gradually became less involved and the brewing industry saw an institutionalized shift with home brewing taking a backseat to economic growth. Alas, brewing became a male dominated trade.
Beer continues to be considered a preferred drink by men as made evident by mainstream marketing campaigns and the strong association with male dominated sporting events. However, today women are slowly reclaiming their place in the world of beer. Not only are more women drinking beer, but they are also getting back into the business of brewing and selling craft beer.
SanTan Brewing Company is pioneering the way for women craft brewers in Arizona but they aren’t the only group recognizing this increasingly popular trend. Women’s beer drinking groups have also emerged including a Phoenix based chapter of Girls Pint Out, a group dedicated to connecting like minded women who enjoy an ice cold pint, or two. Girls Pint Out organizes regular beer tastings events for women and is gaining a rapid following in the Phoenix metro area.
In keeping with a focus on the relationship between women and beer, SanTan Brewing Company has developed a relationship with the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Every Tuesday SanTan Brewing Company is offering $3 CanTan canned beer all day with the empty can proceeds benefiting the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
Open since 2007, SanTan Brewing Company has made a name for itself as Arizona’s favorite craft beer operating with a committed to advance the culture of craft beer. SanTan Brewing Company accomplishes this goal through beer production using the highest quality ingredients and methods. In addition to great beer, SanTan has gained a loyal following of craft beer enthusiasts in the Arizona area by offering delicious food, happy hour specials, live music and participating in beer festivals.

Great article, and in celebration of women in craft beer we can’t forget Melissa Osbourne of Four Peaks, who is the only female professional brewer in the state! We love ya Melphi!
