RJ Rockers – Son of a Peach
South Carolina Brewer RJ Rockers Wins Gold at Los Angeles Based Competition
Spartanburg, SC: RJ Rockers Brewing Company, based out of Spartanburg, South Carolina, is one of only a handful of east coast breweries that received medals in the Los Angeles International Commercial Beer Competition last week. The newest addition to the RJ Rockers lineup, Son of a Peach, won the gold medal in the Fruit Wheat Beer category, a triumph over 11 other entries. This was the only beer RJ Rockers submitted for judging.
Mark Johnsen, owner and brewer, was surprised to win the gold among so much competition. “It was quite an honor to win a gold medal with the Peach in a major competition out west. There were a lot of great breweries participating, and it’s nice to know that a little beer from South Carolina can stand up against them.”
The competition was organized by the Los Angeles County Fair and registered with the Beer Judge Certification Program. Each category was judged in a blind tasting in closed sessions with at least three certified judges. The competition was open to all breweries and brewpubs, only accepting beers that were available for sale to the general public. All winning brews will be offered to the public when the Los Angeles County Fair takes place in September and October.
Since its release, RJ Rockers hasn’t been able to keep up with the orders of Son of a Peach, and not just in South Carolina; the brewery ships beer all the way up to Delaware and demand isn’t any less there. Johnsen is excited to start using fresh, local peaches once the brewery makes the final move to downtown Spartanburg this month. “We’re really looking forward to see how much more it will sell now that summer has arrived.”
