Kim Brisson-Lutz Returns to the Maui Brewing Ohana as Brewmaster
Just four years since she departed to the mainland to become Saint Archer Brewing’s Brewmaster, award-winning brewer Kim Brisson-Lutz has accepted the Brewmaster position at Maui Brewing Company. This move marks a homecoming of sorts for Brisson-Lutz who worked as Lead Brewer for Maui from 2008-2012. The news comes to us from Director of Brewing Operations Jesse Houck (whom we introduced in the role earlier this year) after a significant search to find the right hire for the expanding island brewery.
“We are so proud to welcome Kim’s skill and innovation back to Maui Brewing Company,” Houck said. “I have been a huge fan of her work and accomplishments over the last few years and we look forward to bringing that talent back to the islands.”
When asked about how she feels about making the move back to Hawaii, Brisson-Lutz described it as “bittersweet”, adding that while she will miss working with her old [Saint Archer] crew, she is “more than excited to come back to a place that I love so much.”
She went on to explain that when she first departed Maui four years ago, [founder] Garrett Marrero always joked that she was only “going to college” and will come back home when she was done.
“In San Diego, I learned and grew so much as a brewer and a leader,” she said. “I feel I am ready to take on this new challenge at Maui and work with the talented and passionate Maui Brewing crew.”
Brisson-Lutz has built a strong reputation in the craft beer community with her years of experience and thirst for continued education. During her original tenure at Maui Brewing Company, Brisson-Lutz was responsible for the award-winning recipe for La Perouse White Witbier which earned accolades at both the 2010 Great American Beer Festival and 2012 World Beer Cup competitions.
Major expansions in the last year have grown Maui Brewing Company to nearly 45,000 barrels annually; opening up room to experiment with new and innovative brews. Together with Houck and CEO & Founder Garrett Marrero, the team is eager to plan for the continued success of this beloved craft brand whose focus is not only producing quality beer but also building and nurturing a strong sense of community.
“I couldn’t be more thrilled than to welcome Kim back home to Maui,” says Marrero. “We’re stoked that she’s bringing a wealth of experience and innovation back from the mainland and I’m excited at what the brew team will be bringing to the world.”
