Deschutes Brewerys The Abyss Returns
If your favorite beer-lover is missing in action on January 14th, dont panic. They’re probably just one of the many enthusiasts anxiously waiting in line for the release of Deschutes Brewery’s “The Abyss”. This exceptionally popular imperial stout, aged in French oak and bourbon barrels since March, has immense depth with its rich and complex flavors. True to its name, subtle notes of coffee, chocolate, molasses and licorice pull you in deeper and deeper.
First released in December of 2006, The Abyss was so popular it disappeared from store shelves before most people had a chance to experience the unfathomable draw of this brew.
The Abyss has developed somewhat of a cult following, reveals Deschutes Brewerys Jason Randles. In fact, we’ve had reports from some bottle shops where six or seven cases have already been reserved through single bottle orders.
In addition to being a beer aficionados favorite, The Abyss has been showered with industry and consumer awards including being named the Best Stout in the World by Mens Journals October 2007 issue, Top 10 on BeerAdvocate.coms Worlds Best rankings, Gold Medal Imperial Stout at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival and Best Beer Above 7%, International Champion Beer & Supreme Champion at the 2007 International Beer Challenge.
The Abyss was one of those beers I didnt want to end, said beer writer and Mens Journal contributor Christian DeBenedetti. I was totally blown away – this is precious stuff.
Deschutes has offered small quantities of unique beers in the past like Jubel 2000 and Double Bale Quail Imperial I.P.A., but it was not until 2005 that Mirror Mirror officially kicked off the Reserve Series. In celebration of its 20th Anniversary, Deschutes will unveil three special brews in 2008 – The Abyss, The Dissident and an Imperial Black Butte Porter. All Reserve Series beers, including The Abyss, are available in wax-dipped 22-ounce bottles with a suggested retail price of $10. A precious few kegs of The Abyss will also hit the market.
11.0% Alcohol by Volume (ABV)
