The Abyss Named “Worlds Best Stout”
In their recent “Worlds Best Beer Awards” Men’s Journal confirmed what Oregon beer drinkers have known for years: the state produces some of the best beer on the planet.
“We’ve got the best water, hops, and malt right here in the Pacific Northwest,” noted Gary Fish, president of Bend’s Deschutes Brewery, “and people with a passion for making great beer.”
In order to determine the winning beers the magazine conducted an in depth survey of beer industry professionals asking each to name their favorite beer in a variety of categories. In the event of a tie or no consensus the magazine conducted a taste-off to determine the winner.
In the end three Deschutes Brewery beers were included in the magazine’s annual rankings, The Abyss was named the World’s Best Stout and Mirror Pond was recognized as the third best Pale Ale in the world. The magazine also singled out Hop Trip as one of the “Best Beers for Every Occasion.”
“The Abyss was one of those beers I didn’t want to end,” said the article’s author and beer writer Christian DeBenedetti. “I was totally blown away- this is precious stuff.”
