5 Beers to Take on a Deserted Island
I have a love for many different styles of beer. Each month and each year, I am introduced to a new style or take on a style, that yet again, changes my personal tastes. When I started drinking craft brew, the end all be all for me was Samuel Adams Boston Lager, Harp, Guinness, and Red Hook ESB.
While I am very thankful for those beers being in my life, I have moved towards even more flavorful brews over time. This list would be what I would take with me on a deserted island if I had to make that tough decision today.
1) Stone Brewing Co. Ruination IPA – This was my first introduction into California IPA/Double IPA/1.5 IPA territory. I haven’t found anything as beautiful since. Big Mike gave me a twenty two oz bottle for my birthday last week, and it was just as good as it was the first time I tried it. It hovers around 100 IBUs, but is so much more than a bitter beer. It is full of citrus aroma and taste, sweet malts, and tastes so damn good. I would buy it more, but I don’t always trust the stock on my local shelves to be fresh. This is a must try for anyone who loves hops.
2) Port Brewing Hop 15 – Much like Ruination, this brew is for the hop lover. Unlike Ruination, this brew tips in at 10% abv,and will put you to sleep after a bottle, if you aren’t ready for its punch. There is a big fight going on between a boat load of hops and a boat load of sweet malt. I once polished off a growler of this sweet nectar, and was left with a big smile on my face. I used just a little bit to marinade a rib eye steak, and the steak too, was very happy. What a fantastic brew, but not for the light weight.
3) Ommegang Three Philosophers – I think I could easily convert a wine drinker to a Three Philosophers drinker with one glass. Made in Cooperstown, NY, Three Philosophers is a Belgian Style Quadruple, brewed with Cherries. Nothing like a fruit beer such as Sam Cherry Wheat or Pete’s Strawberry Blonde, this is a bready, dark fruit, and hop spiced drink from heaven. You could pair it with dinner, or save it for dessert, either way, it will blow you away.
4) Samuel Adams Octoberfest – How I wish the Boston Beer Company would brew their Octoberfest year ’round. Although on paper, this beer isn’t high in alcohol, one of the grains gets me red and a tad tipsy after one beer. It never stops me, as I can drink a 12 pack at at time. Following what seems to be a very traditional Marzen recipe, this beer not only impresses me, but also any guests I serve this too.
5) Pabst Blue Ribbon – Some might love it, some might hate it. While watching my father drink this growing up, I swore I would never drink beer based on the smell and taste of good old PBR. After out growing my college days of 30 packs of Miller, and staying the course in my journey of craft brew exploration, I was re-introduced to Pabst. I found out that it is a damn fine, versitile beer. Whether you are working on something, entertaining guests, or going to the beach, Pabst has its place. It is ideal ice cold, and has no bad aftertaste, or side effects. On a deserted island, I would make sure I always have a PBR in my hand, to stay refreshed.
Do you have your own 5? If so, you can comment below!

What 5 beers would I want to have if I were stuck in a deserted island…or…if I only could buy 5 different beers for the rest of my life? Such a tough question!
Here are my top 5:
1) Unibroue La Fin Du Monde: my alltime favorite beer! IMO this Belgian-style tripel ale from Chambly, Quebec (Canada) gives fine Belgian tripel ales such as Delerium Tremens and Chimay Cinq Cents a run for their money!
2) Dogfish 90 Minute IPA: the finest ever Imperial India Pale Ale ever!
3) Delerium Tremens: my first ever favorite Belgian tripel ale…it always will hold a special place in my heart!
4) Dogfish Golden Era: a fine version of the Imperial Pilsner…very hoppy aroma with strong citrusy, refreshing taste!
5) Eggenberg Urbock 23: The finest beer from Schloss Eggenberg Brewery in Vorchdorf Austria! IMO…the best beer ever from the German lands!
Cheers! 🙂
