Dogfish Head 120 Minute IPA
20% abv
Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a chilled pint glass.
Appearance
Rich and rustic fall pumpkin color with very little head. This beer is the cloudiest of all the Dogfish IPAs but has tiny bubbles and leave scarce head.
Aroma
Very sweet and fragrant from the high-alpha hops. Big alcohol smell from the absurd +/- 20% abv. Also some fruity notes in the background but you have to smell for them.
Taste
Overwhelmingly sweet and hoppy even for the hoppiest of heads. Slightly chewy and thick with a fruit juice like consistency. Reminds me almost of a stale orange juice in several ways.
Mouthfeel
Very little carbonation allowed the alcohol to singe my mouth and the back of my throat, leaving a tingling feeling well after the beer was gone. Sticky and gooey would also describe how this beer lays on the tongue.
Overall
There is a reason that the bottle says the “Holy Grail” of beers. This extreme IPA is probably the foremost cause of the hops shortage in the craft beer industry. All kidding aside, I got such a buzz from this beer that I immediately fell in love. The overpowering alcohol burn compliments that hops flavor perfectly. If Dogfish set out to create the strongest IPA ever, I would bet my stash that they succeeded.

Why Chill a pint glass and add water to this perfectly delicious IPA….the beer is best served in a non chilled belgium style snifter @ 55deg.F ….in our humble opinion….

We may joke about this beer being the cause of the hop shortage but if too many breweries keep putting out beers like this, there certainly will be. I think brewers should be responsible in how many resources they are using to make “big” beers. There may come a time when beers like this will just be a distant memory.
