Ken Schmidt/Maui/Stone Kona Coffee Macadamia Coconut Porter
From Stone Brewing’s Blog – Ken won our March Madness Competition at our AHA Rally with his Aloha Plenty Porter? Well, we were stoked to brew with Ken and replicate his decadent creation on a larger scale, and Greg got the bright idea to invite Garrett Marerro from Maui Brewing Co. to join in on the collaboration and bring his CoCoNut Porter brewing expertise to the table. Garrett agreed to come on board, and thus the beer officially became Ken Schmidt/Maui/Stone Kona Coffee, Macadamia, Coconut Porter.
Stone Collaboration (Brewed at Stone Brewing Co.) – Ken Schmidt/Maui/Stone Kona Coffee Macadamia Coconut Porter – 12 oz. bottle poured into a goblet. 8.5% abv. Found at Whole Foods Market Pasadena.
Appearance: Pours a midnight brown with a 1/4 inch, dense khaki colored head.
Aroma: Prepared Kona coffee, ground Kona coffee beans, roasted malt.
Taste: Bitter coffee and coffee grinds, macadamia nuts, toasted and burnt coconut, bitter chocolate, acidic coffee twang, and slight spicy hop notes.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied and very coating.
Overall: This beer is very heavy on the coffee. If you are in the mood for a full flavored blast of good coffee with some spiciness, this is for you. I imagined this to be as sweet as Maui Coconut porter, but this is much drier and accentuates notes found in a cup of black coffee.
