The 2008 Beijing Olympic Games
Finds Support in the Craft Beer Community
The Beijing summer games marks the 29th (XXIX) summer games. There are around 10, 500 athletes expected to participate in 28 sports consisting of 302 total events. With the Opening Ceremonies scheduled for August 8, many in the brewing community have close ties to those participating.
Dellys Starr, sponsored by Oskar Blues in Lyons, CO, will be participating as the sole female member of the Australian mountain biking team. Starr will be riding a 6K course in an event that will last about 2 hours. The mountain biking competition is scheduled for August 22-23. Oskar Blues will be keeping a close watch on Starr through their online blog.
Kern River Brewing Company in Kernville, CA, is full of Olympic spirit. Two of its three-member board of directors are former Olympic paddlers. Eric Giddens, Ph.D. participated in the 1996 Olympics and also coached his wife, Rebecca Giddens to her silver medal win in the 2004 Athens games in the whitewater slalom event. Of course, the games will be a big part of August at Kern River.
