Karl Strauss Brewing Company presents Karlfest 2007
San Diego Oktoberfest and 1st Annual Homebrew Competition
_______________________________________________________
This year’s Karlfest, which includes our 1st Annual Homebrew Competition, is scheduled to take place Saturday, October 6, 2007, from 12-5pm at our Rose Canyon Brewery in Pacific Beach. The event is our take on Oktoberfest done San Diego style—complete with live music, grilled foods, specialty firkins, and our 1st Annual homebrew competition. The homebrew competition will be judged by both BJCP certified members as well as our Karl Strauss Brewers. The Grand Prize Winner of the competition will get to brew his/her winning recipe on a professional system with one of our brewers and have the winning beer served on tap at one or more of our brewery restaurants.
In addition, the winning beer will also be co-entered with Karl Strauss Brewing Company into the 2008 Great American Beer Festival Pro Am—a competition that encourages breweries to co-enter beers with homebrewers. For more info on the GABF click here. In addition to our six core beers and several specialty beers on tap, Karlfest will feature 5-6 firkins made just for the event. Firkins are a traditional way of serving beer in small casks instead of big kegs. To tap a firkin, brewers drive a spigot through the front of the keg with a wooden mallet and this often results in a spray of beer that frequently soaks the front line of onlookers. Some of the ideas for our firkins so far, include a whiskey porter, soured brown ale, pomegranate hefeweizen, and espresso brown ale. We will also be ceremoniously tapping a firkin of our Karl Strauss Oktoberfest to kick off the festivities. One of our brewers, Adam Carbonell, has teamed up with Chuck Silva from Green Flash to brew a batch of California Common (or San Diego Uncommon, as the Brewers call it) for the San Diego Brewer’s Guild that we are pleased to be serving at the event. In between judging beer, our brewers will be giving brewery tours.
Several local vendors will be on-site with food in addition to the grilled chicken and sausage that our brewery restaurant chefs will be preparing. We are eager to share our passion for beer and food. We will also be offering select beer and cheese pairings. Karlfest wouldn’t be complete without live music and this year we are proud to be featuring several local bands that have been getting a lot of buzz around town, including The Swedish Models, Transfer, and a couple of other local favorites.
Tickets for the event go on sale August 31 online at www.karlstrauss.com –be sure to buy your tickets early because we are limiting the capacity to 1000 people. Online presale tickets are $10, tickets at the door are $15. Entry includes a taster glass and 5 beer samples.
