Karl Strauss Brewing Company hosts “San Diego Beer Community Convergence”
With the 5th Annual Craft Brewers Conference only weeks away, Karl Strauss Brewing Company is busy preparing for the San Diego Beer Community Convergence.
This private, industry party will be held on Friday, April 18th at the Karl Strauss Main Brewery in Pacific Beach. Karl Strauss Brewer, Matt Walsh, has worked to secure sponsorships for the event from several national and local industry related companies including Muntons/Crosby & Baker, White Labs, and Hop Union.
The event will feature over 70 taps, including beer from all the San Diego Brewers Guild members, as well as several out of state breweries, local wineries, and a small selection of award winning homebrews from one of San Diego’s homebrew clubs, QUAFF.
Over 600 conference members are expected to attend the event, which will feature a special beer brewed for the conference by members of the San Diego’s Brewers Guild. Headed by Chuck Silva of Green Flash, this year’s conference beer is a San Diego IPA—with ingredients donated by various San Diego breweries. The San Diego Community Beer Convergence will take place from 5pm-11pm. A conference badge is required for entry.
In addition to gearing up for the Craft Brewers Conference, Karl Strauss is in preparation for their 5th Annual Surfrider Beach to Brewery Beer and Music Festival, which will take place on Saturday, May 10th at their Main Brewery in Pacific Beach. This year’s festival will feature the local music of The Shy’s, Hotel St. George, and Stranger—with a special headliner to be announced April 11. All proceeds from the event go to benefit the San Diego Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation. Last year, Karl Strauss donated $15,000 to Surfrider.
In addition to a monetary donation, Karl Strauss is excited to take their involvement with Surfrider to the next level. This year’s Beach to Brewery will include the use of 100% organic shirts, as well as a focus on recycling. The company is also working with Surfrider to host two beach clean ups in the Mission Beach area.
The first beach clean will be Saturday April 24, as part of the countywide “Creek to Bay Clean Up Day,” in conjunction with 91X. The second beach clean up will be an internal event for Karl Strauss employees on Friday May 2nd near Belmont Park. Beach to Brewery is from 2pm-7pm, and free shuttles will be provided from Pacific Beach Library and Dusty Rhodes Park in Ocean Beach. Pre sale tickets and more information are available at www.karlstrauss.com.
April’s Cask Night at the Karl Strauss Brewery Restaurants will feature the much-anticipated return of the Double IPA. This medium bodied ale comes in at 8.8% abv and is brewed with a blend of four hop varieties.
Glacier, Horizon, Cascade and Nugget hops give this beer citrusy and pine-like flavors, while English Maris Otter malts provide a firm malty backbone. Despite it’s high alcohol content, this beer finishes smooth with a pleasant, lingering hop bitterness. Stop by one of the Brewery Restaurants on Cask Night for a $3.50 pint—get there early because when it’s gone, it’s gone!
