Nationally-known beer writer Lew Bryson will be on hand to discuss Prohibition, tap the first keg, offer a ceremonial toast and sign copies of his Pennsylvania Breweries book.
“The current microbrewery explosion pales in comparison to the number of American breweries that existed before Prohibition,” explains Chris Trogner. “It’s important to remember these past milestones and not lose sight of their significance today.”
In recognition of this momentous occasion Tröegs Brewery will be unveiling Scratch #11-2008 (See style details below.) in a firkin. There will be firkins of Tröegs Pale Ale and Hopback Amber Ale. In addition we will be serving a six-month aged version of Scratch #4-2007. This barley wine was the fasted selling Scratch Beer to date, selling out more than 150 cases in just six days. Other beers include all Tröegs year-round offerings, Sunshine Pils and a few other surprises.
The evening will feature a light fare catered menu courtesy of Flinchy’s along with period music by the Hoppin John Orchestra.
Tickets purchased before the end of the day on Thursday, April 10 are $25. Tickets purchased after April 10 are $40. There is also a Patron/Sponsor ticket available for $75/couple.
The ticket fee covers food and entertainment, and supports the Dauphin County Historical Society. Beer will be sold by the pint.
Tickets can be purchased at the Brewery or by phone at 717-232-1297. They can also be purchased online at www.troegs.com or www.dauphincountyhistory.org.

Scratch Beer Update: #11-2008 Details and #10-2008 Waiting in the Wings
Keep on your toes; we are switching the release order of the next two Scratch Beers.
Next up, we present Scratch Beer #11-2008, a Bitter. We used to brew a little number called Tröegs ESB. Even though this beer was retired almost six years ago, we still get numerous Tröegs old-schoolers begging for its return.
Well hang onto your boot straps because Scratch #11 is about as close as we can get to the original ESB without firing up the old brew kettle. The Scratch #11 recipe originates from Chris’ stint at England’s University of Sunderland brewing program. After returning to Colorado the brothers drew on Chris’ experience and brewed pilot batches tweaking that recipe. The ESB production recipe has direct bloodlines to these pilot batches.
So to all you ESB freaks (Martha) out there—sit back, relax and enjoy. Scratch #11-2008 was made just for you. And to answer the ever-asked question: No, we won’t be making ESB again. Here are ingredient details:
Original Gravity – 13 Plato
ABV – 4.9%
IBUs – 48
Malts – Dark Crystal, Roasted Barley, Extra Special Malt
Hops – East Kent Golding, Williamette, Chinook
Yeast – Thames Valley ale yeast
Scratch #10-2008 is waiting in the wings and is ready to go as soon as we move some Scratch #11 out the door. We expect to start selling #10 in late April.
The Return of the Sunshine (Pils)
Tröegs Sunshine Pils is now available in cases and kegs across our six-state distribution network. Cases, kegs and growlers are now available in the Tröegs Tasting Room.
Sunshine Pils combines the crisp taste of European style pilsners with a zesty, vibrant hop finish to create a balanced, refreshing beer. Brewed in the traditional “Old World” European Pilsner-style, Tröegs Sunshine Pils is handcrafted using only malted barley, Noble hops and bottom-fermenting yeast. Straw in color with a fluffy white head, Sunshine Pils is the perfect spring and summer beer.
“This year’s Sunshine is identical to last year, said John Trogner. “We are using German Northern Brewer hops for bittering and the traditional Czech Saaz hop taste shines through in the aroma. Don’t let the light color of this beer fool you; it has a crisp hop bite and a refreshing taste. It’s the beer for all your outdoor activities.”
There will be numerous Sunshine Pils events throughout the spring and summer, and keep an eye out for Sunshine Pils during the summer deck season. Bring on the sun!
