Widmer Brothers Reserve Kill Devil Brown Ale
From Widmer Brothers – Aged in Puerto Rican rum barrels, and brewed with Sweet Barbados and Blackstrap molasses, palm sugar, and Calypso hops, Kill Devil’s flavor and name were inspired by the ingredients used by Caribbean distillers.”
Widmer Brothers Brewing – Widmer Brothers Reserve Kill Devil Brown Ale – 22 oz. bottle poured into a goblet. 9.5% abv.
Appearance: Pours a dark iced tea brown with a swirly white film a top.
Aroma: Fruity floral tea, sugar, bubble gum.
Taste: Cola, brown sugar, licorice. Mild hop bitterness. No nuttiness or traditional brown ale notes. Didn’t find anything particularly boozy about the taste.
Mouthfeel: Full bodied fizzy.
Overall: Well above average, and exceeded my expectations for a Brown Ale. Widmer along with Karl Strauss try not to go too extreme with their barrel aging, but I would like them to take a chance and make something with some more barrel character, meaning keep the juice in the barrels longer.
