Review – Stoudt’s Imperial Oatmeal Stout
“Fat Dog” Imperial Oatmeal Stout
9% abv
Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a chilled pint glass.
Appearance
Very dark, almost a midnight black color with hints of root beer brown. A very thin khaki colored film of head blanketing the top of the glass.
Aroma
Smells just like a hot, steamy bowl of cinnamon oatmeal. Also chocolately and sweet.
Taste
Rich and creamy like a nice cup of coffee or a delicious milkshake. The hops provide a unique, balanced but sour and bitter aftertaste on the sides of the mouth.
Mouthfeel
Very smooth and silky with a slightly bitter aftertaste from the full flavored hops. Good carbonation but not overwhelming.
Overall
This stout was very flavorful and enjoyable. Immediately after pouring, I knew I was going to be in for a treat just from the dark, rich color and aroma alone. If you are looking for a Guinness type stout, look elsewhere because this Fat Dog is legions better in both appearance and flavor.
