Review – Maui Brewing Coconut Porter
Maui Brewing Co. Coconut Porter
5.5% abv
Poured from a 12 ounce can into a room temperature glass mug.
Appearance
Dark brown with deep black spots. Reminds me of a stout more than a porter based on the color. Not much head with only about a half inch of tan creamy foam.
Aroma
Rich roasted coffee and chocolate smells. Malty notes lingering as well.
Taste
The toasted coconut is a little vague but still noticeable. This beer was much sweeter than most porters. I looked for hops but could not find anything. They were overpowered by the malts in this beer.
Mouthfeel
Surprisingly light in body and texture for a porter. I was expecting a bigger beer. Not much carbonation going on but definitely sweetness on the tongue and cheeks of my mouth.
Overall
My buddy Dan sent me a sample of this porter and I was delighted when it arrived. Something about the sound of coconut with a rich, dark and creamy porter sounds right in my mind. I was not disappointed. This beer was delicious and I hope to get my hands on more soon. I also really like the idea behind Maui putting their beer in cans (i.e. keeps light out, better for environment, etc.)
