Review – Leinenkugel's Sunset Wheat

Sunset Wheat 4.9% abv

Appearance
This beer is very light in color and with very little head retention. Although quite cloudy, natural orange and yellows peer through like rays of sunshine.

Aroma
At first, this beer smells very fruity. It reminds me of fresh blueberry pie from my Mother’s oven. The sweet smell almost overpowers the fresh, spicy aromas that linger in the background.

Taste
Very sweet and refreshing, this beer slides down easily. The citrus and pine notes from the yeast and hops are balanced brilliantly with the sweetness from the malt and wheat. I couldn’t put my finger on it but there was a definite spice lingering that I considered the icing on the cake.

Mouthfeel
Due to the sweetness of this beer, my mouth felt a little sugary. It was also very light and refreshing with an airy, easy drink ability. Not much alcohol in this brew left my mouth feel clean and satisfied.

Overall
Now that the warmer temperatures are starting to hit New Jersey, I have been sampling several lighter, more refreshing beers, just like this wheat. It was a perfect match with the traditional ham dinner for Easter and I will buy this beer again. At first I was a little skeptical because I tried Leinenkugel’s Berry Weisse at the Philly Beer Fest and it was just too sweet for my liking. However, even with the nice sweetness presented in this beer, I feel immediately in love.
