Review – Lagunitas Lucky13 Mondo Large Red Ale
Lagunitas Lucky 13 was originally released two years ago, in honor of Lagunitas’ 13th anniversary and I had a chance to try it originally with Mike. I was told not to age the beer, as it would lose its big hoppiness. I was pleasantly surprised to find that this has been re-released, despite being past their 13 anniversary. If Lagunitas makes a bad beer, I haven’t seen it or tried it. They are batting 1000 in my opinion.
Lagunitas Lucky 13 Mondo Large Red Ale. 22oz bottle 8.3% abv.
Appearance:
A dark ruby red with a 1/4 inch white head. Heavy lacing all the way down.
Aroma:
Sweet malts and citrus. A tad whiff of red berry as well.
Taste:
Strong hop presence. Strong pne and metallic hops and sugary sweet malts at the finish. In the epic battle between the hops and malts, the hops wins in this one.
Mouthfeel:
Sticky and puckering. Coats your mouth with the strong hop flavor, and stays on your tongue long after you sip. The carbonation brings out the spiciness of the hops and tingles the tongue.
Overall:
A hop bomb of a beer, and a strong one too. I like my big reds a little sweeter, but this unique offering gets better with every sip. The first one is a bit strong though. Other beers you might like that are similar would be Port Brewing’s Shark Attack Double Red Ale or Bear Republic Red Rocket Ale.
