Recently, I had the chance to sample a few old favorites from Lagunitas Brewing Company, as well as one I hadn’t gotten to try yet. Right now, Lagunitas is stocking Cappuccino Stout Ale and Brown Shugga where finer beers are sold. Also, you can find ‘Kill Ugly Radio’ IPA in select spots around the country.
The Cappuccino Stout Ale is might spectacular. It has rich flavors of chocolate and coffee. It is not as thick as a traditional stout, and that is why I believe they put Ale on the end of the name. It has a high alcohol content, but you would never know. I paired this brew with some Dove chocolate truffles, and it added to my enjoyment. According to my contact at Lagunitas, this, along with the Brown Shugga was bottled very recently. With that said, I think this fresh batch has a spicy note to it, that mellows out within four months of being bottled.
Brown Shugga really surprised me. I had it one other time on tap, at Naja’s in Redondo Beach, CA. When I had it there, I thought it was far too sweet, and didn’t understand the appeal. The fresh bottle I tried erased my reservations about the beer. I am not sure it has always been 9.9% abv, but that took me aback as well. This time around, it tasted like a hoppy barley wine with a finish of brown sugar. Would probably go good with a slice of pumpkin pie or some gingerbread.
I was lucky enough to find ‘Kill Ugly Radio’ IPA at Whole Foods Pasadena. I am ignorant to anything that has to do with Frank Zappa. I know of him, but I don’t know his music, or what he is about. With that said, the bottle is cool, and the beer is even better. It is a very fruity, juicy, hopped up 1.5 IPA. It’s a 1.5 rather than a double because the abv isn’t quite there, and the texture is a lot thinner. This beer would go good anytime, with anything in my opinion.
I recommend picking up anything they make, and giving it a try. They mix a well crafted beer, with love, and a sense of humor. It’s pretty hard for me not to dig that.
