Review – Harpoon UFO Hefeweizen
From Harpoon Brewery – Inspired by the cloudy beers drank in many German beer gardens, UFO Hefeweizen was first brewed in the fall of 1998. Originally available on draft only in select bars throughout the Boston area, it wasn’t long before UFOs were being spotted in groups of six all around Massachusetts and New England. Over the years, more and more people have caught on to what we’ve been doing, but the mission has always been the same: brew some great beer and have some fun enjoying it. We hope you do too!
Harpoon Brewery – UFO (UnFiltered Offering) Hefeweizen – 12 oz. bottle poured into a glass. 5% abv. Purchased in a Harpoon Sampler pack at Dawson’s Liquor in Severna Park, MD.
Appearance: Cloudy yellow at the edge of the glass, tapering to a lightest-orange in the middle. A good amount of fizzy, white head which dissipates quickly.
Aroma: Both sweet and dry citrus aromas.
Taste: Very crisp and clean with little fruit or spice. If you look for it, you can taste Juicyfruit gum.
Mouthfeel: Thin and highly carbonated.
Overall: This is the first hefe I’ve actually liked. I can’t stand the sourdough flavors that so many wheat beers have, nor am I crazy about the signature banana and clove flavors present in many hefes. This has none of that and is an excellent, refreshing summertime beer. Sadly, I had no lemons; I’ll pick one up before drinking the other bottle.
