Review – Harpoon Ale
From Harpoon Brewery – Harpoon Ale was the first in the family of Harpoon beers. It is important to know that when it was first brewed in 1987, there were virtually no other American Pale Ales or Amber Ales available in Boston, let alone an ale brewed within the city limits. Harpoon Ale was the product of extensive research and test brews by Harpoon’s founders to find the right beer to launch the Harpoon Brewery. It has a loyal following to this day.
Harpoon Brewery – Harpoon Ale – 12 oz. bottle poured into a glass. 4.9% abv. Purchased as part of a Harpoon Sampler Pack – Purchased at Dawsons Liquor – Severna Park, MD.
Appearance: A brassy copper with a moderately-sized white head. Leaves a sheet of fine lace on the glass, but slides down into the beer quickly.
Aroma: Not much. A bit of white bread and light citrus is all I get.
Taste: Not much here, either. Rather watery. Tastes like weak, unsweetened iced tea with a bit of lemon or lime.
Mouthfeel: Thicker than the watery taste would suggest, but still is rather insubstantial.
Overall: This is not my kind of beer. If you’re looking for a light-bodied beer that is inoffensive to anyone, this may be good for you. If you’re looking for flavor, steer clear.
