Review – Founders Breakfast Stout
From Founders Brewing – You’ve got to love coffee to truly appreciate this phenomenal brew. Brewed with an abundance of flaked oats, bitter and sweetened imported chocolates, Sumatra and Kona coffee. Breakfast Stout has an intense fresh roasted coffee nose topped with a cinnamon colored frothy head that seems to never fade and makes you wish breakfast could last forever.
Founders Brewing – Founders Breakfast Stout – Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a room temperature pint glass. – 8.3% abv
Appearance
Dark molasses with an almost syrup consistency. I tried hard to find some hints of browns and reds but this beer is as dark as a night with no moon.
Aroma
Toast and burnt cheese (in a good way). Nutty and bold with a strong presence of alcohol.
Taste
First thing that popped into my mind was the bold coffee and chocolate flavors. As I continued to sip, I picked out some sweet milky caramel and nutty flavors from the roasted malts.
Mouthfeel
A bit on the flat side with a smooth, thick coating in my mouth. As this liquid breakfast continued down my throat, I felt the warming sensation from the alcohol.
Overall
My friend John picked up a few of these and I am grateful he brought one by for me to taste. I am a big fan of stouts but for some reason, I held onto this one for a few weeks before cracking it open. When I did, I was very pleased. Breakfast and beer. Who knew that this could be such a great combination. And I am not talking about pouring some Natty Ice on your Cap’N Crunch.

Just pulled a 2010 vintage out of my “cellar”…not bad, but I don’t like coffee THAT much. Check out my review here: http://behindthebrews.wordpress.com/2011/12/12/founders-breakfast-stout-2010-review-20/

I was just reading the latest Brew Your Own magazine and on page 11 there is a “replicator” article that has a clone home brew recipe for this beer.
Another Stout that I think of as breakfast is Buffalo Bill’s Blueberry Oatmeal Stout. It is almost like blueberry syrup on some waffles and in a good way.
