Review – Flying Fish Hopfish IPA
Flying Fish Hopfish IPA 6.2% abv
Reviewed by Evan
Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a chilled pint glass.
Appearance
This beer is a clear but rich golden color with a lot of head retention. The lacey foam is probably a good inch or two and really is mouthwatering.
Aroma
The hops used in making this beer give it a very bold aroma. I would call the flowery notes ‘gigantic’ to say the least with a bit of a fruity nose to boot.
Taste
Truckloads of bitterness from the Nugget hops and a faint sweetness from the malt. This brew is very refreshing and goes down easily. Many of taste-bud lacking friends who like to stick to their Bud and Miller actually like this beer for it’s smooth and hoppy flavor.
Mouthfeel
This beer makes my mouth feel gooey from the hop oils. These oils also provide a slight tingling sensation on the roof of my mouth, which sounds weird but is quite pleasant.
Overall
Now I am not sure if it is because Flying Fish is just up the road from me (New Jersey), but their beers are some of the best I have ever had. Their stab at an IPA is no different. From the moment I first sipped this beer at one of their weekly beer tastings, I was hooked. Flying Fish says on their website that 22 lbs of hops are used to dry-hop this beer and it sure tastes that way. I hope that they make this IPA forever as it is surely one of my favorites.

I enjoyed the Hop-Fish, but I wouldn’t necessarily agree with all the accolades bestowed upon it by the review I read on here.
It is pretty smooth, and the flavor is hoppy, but not so hoppy as to linger. The color is more golden than pale ale. The head was less than thick. The aroma is pleasant, and the beer is very drinkable. Not quite as filling as some others. I prefer a stronger hop in my IPA. Given the choice, I’d take Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA over Flying Fish Hop-Fish. But I would recommend it for anyone looking for a “not-quite-THAT-flavorful” IPA.
