Review – Dogfish Head 2006 Raison D’Extra
Dogfish Head 2006 Raison D’Extra
abv 18%
Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a chilled pint glass.
Appearance
Dark brown in color with hints of light tan streaming throughout. Looks pretty thick and is cloudy from the sediment of raisins floating all around. Not much head to speak of and very little carbonation bubbles.
Aroma
Strong alcohol smells and sweet notes of caramel and brown sugar. The ripe fruit smells are very noticeable compared to the Etre.
Taste
Sweet and sugary, almost like a maple syrup or brown sugar icing. Quite delicious. The yeast adds to the already fruity character and blends nicely with the brown sugar.
Mouthfeel
Each gulp is unique and required me to sit back and chew on it. This is definitely not a chuggable-beer. There is so much going on in my mouth that I found myself pondering the subtle flavors.
Overall
Earlier this year, I was visiting Delaware and found two bottles of Extra on the shelf of a brew store. I picked them both up at $10.99 per 12 ounce bottle and decided that I would give one to my beer drinking buddy John. We often talked about cellaring these but I had a hunch that we would not be able to hold out very long. Then, last weekend while I went to pick up lunch, my brother accidentally grabbed my bottle and drank it before I arrived back home. I was so upset I almost cried. However, John came to the rescue and offered to split his bottle with me so I could at least know what the Extra was all about.

Good review. This is not one of my top beers, but it is a nice once in awhile beer. Definitely one to put in a nice glass and sip through the evening.
