Review – Black Dog English Style Amber Ale
Black Dog English Style Amber Ale
5.2% abv
Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a chilled pint glass.
Appearance
Red-brown amber color with a light tan foamy head. This beer is quite thick looking, almost like a milk shake.
Aroma
Yeast and citrus fruits. Some hints of orange and lemon are nicely balanced with the sweet bread-like qualities from the malt and yeast.
Taste
This beer has a deep, rich taste with bold flavor characteristics. There are many complex flavors from the caramel and chocolate malts, all of which are very tasty. The hops were tucked away in the background but I found them after a little searching, especially the very strong Chinook and Centennial.
Mouthfeel
Slightly sticky with excellent carbonation. This beer was surprisingly easy to drink, contrary to the initial appearance.
Overall
I have been sporting a Black Dog Ale baseball cap daily for the last two months. It was a prize that I won at the Philly Beer Fest and it fits like a glove. I started feeling guilty though and decided that I should purchase a few Black Dog beers and boy am I glad I did. This amber ale has all of the characteristics of a strong, English ale but with plenty of drink ability. Many times I will buy mix-match six packs with two beers of each style. Now I am glad that I bought the entire six pack of this because I can hardly wait to have another.
