Review – Alesmith Decadence 2006 (Imperial Evil Dead Red Ale)
I am a big fan of Alesmith, and find their 750ml bottles to be worth the $10-12 dollars they charge. It is luxurious beer. I have let this beer age for over a year, and am revisiting it. When I tried it, it was very similar to a fresh Winter Yulesmith.
Alesmith Decadence Anniversary Ale – Imperial Evil Dead Red Ale/Dead by Dawn 2006 – 750 ml poured into a Samuel Smith pub glass. 9.9% abv.
Appearance: Dark red with a huge, fluffy head. Leaves very spotty patches of lace.
Aroma: Malt, malt, and more sweet malt. Also of note, a small hint of hops.
Taste: Sweet and spicy malt. Red apple skin, and a tad bit of hop bitterness in the finish.
Mouthfeel: Syrupy and sticky.
Overall: This beer lost its hops, even after keeping it refridgerated. While I will get a sweet buzz, and the experience of an aged Alesmith, I was really not ready for how sticky and malty this bad boy got. Luckily, 2007 was an Imperial Porter, and will probably age much nicer.
