Alaskan Brewing Smoked Porter
Alaskan Brewing – Alaskan Brewing Smoked Porter Chilled draft beer poured into a room temperature pint glass. 6.5% abv. Enjoyed at Toronado in San Francisco, CA.
Appearance
Rich and dark brown, almost black, in color. Very fine line of tan head on top that left clean lace rings down the glass.
Aroma
Extremely smokey with hints of sweet chocolate. Tried but could not find any hop notes in the smell.
Taste
Again, smokey. There were levels of intensity with the smoke flavor, separated by the sweetness of the malt. Some bitter notes from the hops and a good alcohol flavor.
Mouthfeel
Thick and muddy with minimal carbonation. This beer flows down the throat like a warm molasses.
Overall
This very limited edition porter from Alaskan was a real treat. My first two batches of home brew ever were an English IPA and a Smoked Porter that used smoked wood chips for flavor and aroma. Ever since, I have been a sucker for rauchbier (smoked flavored beer) and was lucky to find this one on tap. This would be great paired with a smoked dish and warm, wood burning fireplace on a cold night.

I had this in a bottle once and savored every drop. Sounds like I should make a trip up to Toronado soon before they run out!
