Wolaver’s Organic Ales is First Non-GMO Vermont Brewery
(Middlebury, VT) — The nation’s first organic brewery is now the first Vermont brewery to be certified Non-GMO. A pioneer in the organic brewing industry, Wolaver’s Organic Ales is proud to announce verification through The Non-GMO Project, a non-profit organization committed to preserving and building the non-GMO food supply, educating consumers, and providing verified Non-GMO choices.
“Consumers know exactly what to expect when they buy a Wolaver’s product,” said brewmaster Mike Gerhart
“[Non-GMO verification] is a feather in the cap for us,” he said.
The timing couldn’t have been better.
On Thursday, May 8, Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin signed the first-in-the-nation GMO food labeling bill that will require genetically engineered food be labeled by 2016.
“We have a right to know what’s in the food we buy,” Shumlin said as he addressed a crowd of farmers, environmental groups and businesses.
The Non-GMO verification is a detailed process according to Tosha Pope, quality assurance manager at Wolaver’s Organic Ales, but this is “something we believe in,” she said.
“Vermonters are becoming more informed and aware of the food they’re consuming,” she said. “We’re starting to see that same philosophy applied to their beer choices.”
Wolaver’s has long been a champion of sustainable agriculture, responsible business practices and great beer.
“This is just the start,” stated Jed Nelson, marketing director for the brewery. “We’re already working on certification for our Otter Creek line of beers. We wont stop this process until every beer we produce features the Non-GMO logo on the packaging.”
The complete line of Wolaver’s Orgainc beers have been verified Non-GMO, they include:
Wolaver’s India Pale Ale
Wolaver’s Oatmeal Stout
Wolaver’s Brown Ale
Wolaver’s Pumpkin Ale
Wolaver’s Wildflower Wheat
Wolaver’s Alta Gracia Coffee Porter
