Terrapin Beer Co. Doubles Fermentation Capacity
Athens, GA – Terrapin Beer Co. has announced yet another expansion of its Athens Georgia brewing facility. On the heels of Terrapin’s Seven Year Anniversary the company has installed a total of eight new fermentation tanks. The tanks vary in size from 100 to 120 barrels and will double the overall fermentation capacity at Terrapin, a much needed move for this rapidly growing micro brewery.
With a typical fermentation taking about 3-4 weeks, fermentation space was a major bottle neck for Terrapin before this new addition. With the new tanks the brewery will be able to produce more than 20,000 barrels of beer this year – significantly more than the 12,000 barrels they produced in 2008.
Terrapin’s growth in the southeast has been strong with 53% revenue and 39% volume increases in 2008. This impressive growth rate has earned Terrapin a place as one of the top 10 Southern regional breweries. “These new tanks are going to increase our growth potential and allow us to continue to be one of the most experimental breweries in the Southeast,” said John Cochran, President and Co-Founder of Terrapin Beer Co. “We’ve got two new brands in the pike that would not have been possible without these tanks.”
Terrapin’s growth has been fueled in part by the introduction of two popular brands in the last year, the year round Sunray Wheat and the Side Project series of limited release, one-time brewing experiments. “Moving into the Athens brewery two years ago gave us a creative freedom we didn’t have before. We plan to take even greater advantage of that with this new fermentation space,” said Brian “Spike” Buckowski, Master Brewer and Co-Founder of Terrapin.
Terrapin Beer Co has a portfolio of four year round beers, four seasonal high gravity beers and a reputation for pushing the boundaries of creative brewing. Regularly scheduled tours of the Terrapin Brewery are offered every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night from 5:30 – 7:30 with live music and tastings. The brewery is located at 265 Newton Bridge Road in Athens, GA. The tours are an excellent opportunity to taste Terrapin’s full line of award winning beers and see the brewing process first hand.
