Shipyard Old Thumper Extra Special Ale Wins Silver in Los Angeles
PORTLAND, MAINE – (June 23, 2012) – Old Thumper Extra Special Ale was honored with a silver award at the 2012 Los Angeles International Commercial Beer Competition. This competition is part of the 90th annual Los Angeles County Fair, which opens on August 31. This internationally recognized fair is the largest in North America and was attended by nearly 1.5 million people last year.
Old Thumper Extra Special Ale won a silver in the Extra Special Bitter, English-Style Extra Special Bitter category. In 2004, Old Thumper took home Best of Show in this competition and, in 2005, also won a silver.
Old Thumper is brewed in the United States solely by Shipyard Brewing Company.
This British Grand Champion beer was created in 1979 by veteran British brewer, Peter Austin, founder of the Ringwood Brewery in Hampshire, England and mentor to Shipyard’s master brewer, Alan Pugsley. After 15 years of being brewed exclusively by Ringwood, on November 3, 1994, Old Thumper made history when it was brewed at Shipyard and introduced to America via a 35 New England bar simultap. Following this massive event, Shipyard began bottling Old Thumper to satisfy consumer demand.
In 2007, this beer won 2nd place at the West Coast Brewers Festival and in 2005 took home 1st place at the California Brewers Festival. This beer has also been named one of the 10 Best American Beers by Business Week.
