Lahaina, Kahana, Maui – Results were recently announced for 2008 Australian International Beer Awards (AIBA).
The Royal Agricultural Society and the University of Ballarat established the Australian International Beer Awards in 1993 and today still jointly conduct the competition. This is Australia’s most prestigious beer event, held annually in Melbourne.
Internationally the AIBA is recognized as a barometer of diversity in beer brewing across the world and is the largest showcase for premium beer and brewing excellence in the Asia Pacific Region. The AIBA has also been instrumental in helping to promote the Australian brewing and brewing-related industries internationally.
In 2007, the AIBA received 941 entries from 39 countries. This event celebrates all that is good in beer and brewing and is a stellar platform for educating consumers, reaching new markets and promoting premium beer.
Maui Brewing Co.’s current trio of packaged all received bronze medals. The beers were entered in the following categories: Bikini Blonde, Class 27 (Lager Packaged); Big Swell IPA, Class 29 (Ale Packaged); and Coconut Porter, Class 31 (Porter Packaged). By AIBA standards, a bronze medal beer is a quality product with the correct balance of taste, aroma and appearance appropriate for the style and the absence of major faults. “It’s quite an honor, especially as this is our first time entering (this competition), Aussies know their beers and make some of the finest in the world. Who knows? This could be a new market for us,” remarks Garrett Marrero of Maui Brewing Co.
Big Swell IPA, Bikini Blonde Lager and Coconut Porter are genuine Hawaiian microbrews wholly produced and packaged in Lahaina by Maui Brewing Co. These products are being distributed throughout the Hawaiian Islands at the present time with mainland distribution later this year.
Founder Garrett Marrero and his wife, Melanie, run a 7-barrel brewpub at the Kahana location as well as the 25-barrel full production brewery and canning facility in Lahaina. Maui Brewing Co. is a truly local beer as 100% of their products are made in Hawaii as opposed to other “Hawaiian” beers.
