Review – Flying Fish Grand Cru Winter Reserve
From Flying Fish: This Belgian-style strong golden ale showcases a variety of the ingredients and brewing methods that help differentiate Flying Fish beers. The Grand Cru is fermented at a higher temperature than our other beers adding an undercurrent of fruitiness (although there is no fruit in the beer). Very lightly filtered, the Grand Cru exhibits complex mouthfeel, strong malt flavors, a spicy hop presence and a soothing alcohol warmth, followed by a clean, dry finish. It is excellent with food as well as served by itself.
Flying Fish Grand Cru Winter Reserve Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a chilled pint glass. 7.2% abv.
Appearance
Clear and golden yellow-orange in color with some obvious sediment. This beer is not filtered very heavily which adds a unique characteristic. Light and fluffy head with small to medium-sized bubbles.
Aroma
Very fruity and sweet with hints of spices makes this beer’s nose quite enjoyable. It is fermented at higher temperatures, which really showcases the unique aroma.
Taste
Relatively easy to drink for a Belgian strong ale. This is a full-bodied beer that reminds me of winter and has strong fruity notes balanced with a solid malt profile.
Mouthfeel
Smooth and silky with just a little bite followed by an enjoyable warming sensation.
Overall
I first had this beer last year at the Flying Fish brewery in Cherry Hill, NJ. I immediately fell in love and have been awaiting the day that it became available this winter. I stocked up with several cases so I can enjoy this special beer well into 2009.
