Review – Stone 12th Anniversary Bitter Chocolate Oatmeal Stout

Poured from a 22oz bottle into a pint glass. Purchased cold, but let stand at room temp for two hours. Purchased from Dawson’s Liquors in Severna Park, MD
Appearance: Darker than a well digger’s @$$#0l3. Maybe 3/8″ of a medium brown head which dissipated very quickly since there was no nitro in the bottle. No lacing.
Nose: Unsweetened cocoa, oats, and asphalt.
Taste: The dark chocolate is definitely apparent on the tongue, although it becomes more pronounced as you drink more and more, especially at the back of the roof.
Mouthfeel: Slightly syrupy as you would expect from a stout but with a bit more carbonation than most.
Drinkability: This is a heavy beer, no doubt about it. This is a beer that I would treat more like a wine than a beer, especially at over 9% ABV (and at $7 for a double-deuce). But, considering that I drink wine one bottle at a time, I will, undoubtedly, finish this in one sitting. I don’t think I could handle more than one bottle of this in a sitting as it has a lingering finish that doesn’t have you constantly reaching for your glass. As always with Stone’s offerings, highly recommended for fans of stout and/or dark chocolate.
